My Review

Veronica Mars-Mr. Kiss and Tell is a thrilling audiobook free to all fans of the beloved series. As a long-term fan, I was excited to dive into this new book and spend more time with the characters I have come to appreciate over the years. However, for newcomers to the series, this book may be poorly paced and lack the high-action events they may have come to expect.

One aspect that stood out to me was the shift in tone. This book was much more procedural, focusing more on the realistic aspects of investigation. While this approach may be more true to life, it did make the story less surprising and exciting. Fans of the show may find joy in spending time with familiar characters, but newcomers might not have the same level of patience.

While the book had its strengths, there were also some flaws. Halfway through, a supposed major twist felt more like a lapse in observation on Veronica’s part. This could be attributed to the major issue weighing on her mind, but it felt uncharacteristic of her usual sharpness. Additionally, there were significant jumps in time related to waiting for DNA results, which caused the story to lose momentum.

Interactions with Logan, Veronica’s love interest, were a highlight of the book. They were sweet and endearing, and there was even a squee-worthy moment when Veronica finally got her pony. I also appreciated the portrayal of military members and their dependents, as I am a member of the US Navy myself. The accuracy and sympathy with which they were depicted added depth to the story.

However, one disappointment was the choice of narrator. It was difficult to get through the prologue, as the narration sounded like a beat poet on Prozac. While it improved slightly when there was interaction between character voices, the difference in narration between this book and the first one was jarring. It’s a shame, as a better narrator could have elevated the audiobook experience.

Overall, Veronica Mars-Mr. Kiss and Tell is a great book for fans of the series. However, I would not recommend starting with this book for newcomers, as there are many references to the series that may be lost on them.
