My Review

As a listener who is a huge fan of Elle Kennedy’s Off-campus series, I was extremely excited when I heard about the spin-off/sequel-ish series set at the same university. Having given all the stories in the original series 5 stars, except for the last one which I still rated 4.5 stars, I couldn’t wait to dive into “The Chase” audiobook free, especially since we had already been introduced to Summer and Fitzy in the original series.

However, I must admit that I was quite disappointed with this story, giving it only 2 stars. The main reason for my dissatisfaction was the main couple themselves. I found Summer to be annoying and overbearing, while Fitzy came across as a jerk. Their individual characterizations and the development of their romance did not resonate with me. There was no real build-up to them becoming closer, and it felt as though they had very little interaction in the first half of the story. Instead, they were caught in a constant tug-of-war between their attraction and conflicting emotions. The fact that they were roommates, and Summer had been involved with another one of their roommates, added additional complications that I found hard to overlook.

Now, let’s dive into some more detailed thoughts about “The Chase” with fair warning that there will be spoilers ahead. Firstly, Summer’s character seemed all over the place. I understood that her ADHD contributed to this, but it became tiring to read about her constant infatuation with Fitzy despite overhearing hurtful comments he made about her. Fitzy, on the other hand, came across as a surprise jerk. His behavior towards Summer was inconsistent, showing attraction one minute and then distancing himself the next.

One major issue I had with the audiobook was the lack of meaningful interactions between the main couple for the first 50-60% of the story. They hardly spoke to each other, with most of their conversations happening during parties or group gatherings. This made it difficult for me to fully invest in their romance. Suddenly, out of nowhere, they share a surprising scene together, after which Fitzy disappears for two days without any explanation. It left me feeling confused and disconnected from their relationship.

The situation with Hunter, another character interested in Summer, added further complications to the story. Fitzy denies any attraction to Summer when Hunter approaches him, but then becomes possessive and angry when Hunter flirts with her. Summer, despite her lingering feelings for Fitzy, decides to pursue things with Hunter, which feels unfair to him. Their actions and reactions towards each other became frustrating and made it difficult for me to root for their happiness.

Additionally, the handling of an iffy situation with one of Summer’s professors left me unsatisfied. It felt like there was a slow build-up leading to a rushed ending, which left me wanting more from the storyline. Furthermore, the romance between Fitzy and Summer never really felt developed or convincing. There was little growth or change in Fitzy’s behavior, and they had very few meaningful conversations.

To be honest, if it wasn’t for the fact that other characters introduced in this book will have their own stories in the series, I would have stopped listening altogether. However, the promise of future novels featuring these characters, particularly Brenna who appears in the second story, kept me engaged. I am especially looking forward to the release of book #3 next month, eager to find out who Hunter will ultimately end up with.

In conclusion, while “The Chase” audiobook free may have been highly anticipated as a spin-off from Elle Kennedy’s successful Off-campus series, it unfortunately fell short of expectations. The lack of development in the main couple’s relationship, shallow interactions, and frustrating character choices left me disappointed. However, the potential for future stories and the hope for more satisfying romances keep me interested in continuing with the series.
