My Review

If you’re in the mood for an audiobook free of cost and don’t mind a scattered storyline, then Flowers of Esthelm by Andrea Parsneau might just be the perfect choice. While the book does have its flaws, it still manages to deliver emotionally impactful moments.

One issue I had with the book was how the various characters seemed to be engaged in activities that didn’t relate to each other. This lack of cohesion made it difficult to discern a clear and cohesive plot. Events would start abruptly and then abruptly stop without any conclusion, leaving me wanting more closure. The story also lacked a clear goal that all the characters were working towards, which made it feel aimless and without direction.

Another sticking point for me was the significant personality changes that some characters underwent without sufficient explanation from the previous books. However, despite these shortcomings, I still appreciated the skillful writing and the emotionally impactful moments that the author delivered.

Personally, I preferred it when the focus was narrowed down to two main protagonists. While I do understand the desire to explore other characters in the world, it would have been better to group their stories together as separate narratives to avoid the messiness that this book had.

The narration of the audiobook was mostly good, but I did encounter some technical issues around the 20-30% mark. The sound would cut out at times, giving the impression that multiple takes were stitched together, which was quite distracting. Fortunately, this problem resolved itself after a while. There were also instances where the voices of different characters blended together, particularly noticeable during segments involving the blind character, making it momentarily unclear who was speaking.

Despite its flaws, Flowers of Esthelm offers emotionally impactful moments and showcases the skill of the author. If you’re willing to overlook the scattered storyline and technical hiccups, then this audiobook might just be worth a listen, especially since it’s available for free!
