My Review

The Justice of Kings audiobook by Lucy Paterson is available for free and it is an oddly enjoyable tale that starts off slow but picks up speed as the story progresses. As someone who loves crime and law-related shows, I was initially intrigued by this book. However, the story is told from the perspective of Helena, a supporting character, rather than the main character, Sir Konrad Vonvalt, which threw me off a bit. Despite this, the author, Richard Swan, did a great job overall, although I felt that the supporting characters could have been developed further.

One of the highlights of the book is the unique and strange magic system, which plays into the theme of justice. As a gateway into Grimdark fantasy, I was pleased with the book and I’m eagerly looking forward to the next installment in the series.

A good test of how much you enjoy a book and care about the characters is to see if you share in their fear and excitement during intense scenes. In The Justice of Kings, there are plenty of moments that will leave you on the edge of your seat. One particular scene, where a character hides under a bed in fear, had me so tense that I would have probably broken someone’s wrist if they had touched me at that moment.

The setting of the story takes place in The Sovan Empire, a collection of pseudo-Germanic states. The author expertly weaves themes of law and order reminiscent of the Roman Empire and the Victorian era. The Sovans bring order and civilization through their common law system, enforced by the powerful Order of Justices. These justices possess arcane powers, such as the ability to compel the truth from someone. However, as the story unfolds, the Empire and the Order are put to the test, raising questions about the limits of justice and the fairness of their system.

The author delves into intriguing themes of legitimacy, equality, and the flaws within the legal system. The growing jury system in the Empire is contrasted with the seemingly unlimited powers of the justices. This provides a thought-provoking commentary on the balance of power and the role of justice within a society.

In addition to the thought-provoking themes, The Justice of Kings also excels in its character development. Sir Konrad Vonvalt, the main character, is a complex and deeply flawed figure. He is a swordsman with arcane powers and a strong belief in the law, but struggles to show emotion and often becomes consumed by his own beliefs. His relationship with Helena, the narrator and a young girl from humble origins, is at the heart of the story. Their dynamic is both poignant and revelatory, and the secondary characters are equally well-developed and engaging.

Despite the slow start, the book is tense and exciting throughout. Every page is addictive, with a perfect balance of worldbuilding, emotional depth, and thematic content. In the final third of the book, the pace intensifies, and the slow build-up pays off as you become deeply invested in the characters and their fates.

Richard Swan’s remarkable assuredness in his fantasy debut is impressive. Although he has previously written self-published novels, The Justice of Kings still stands as an incredible achievement. It is one of the most impressive fantasy debuts in recent years, succeeding in every aspect it attempts. The book sets up a promising trilogy, and it would be an injustice to not devour this book immediately.

In conclusion, The Justice of Kings audiobook, narrated by Lucy Paterson, is a captivating and thought-provoking tale that takes some time to pick up speed but is ultimately rewarding. With its unique magic system, in-depth character development, and expertly crafted worldbuilding, it is a must-read for fantasy fans. And the best part? You can get it for free as an audiobook. So don’t miss out on this immersive and engrossing listening experience.
