Review

Jack Campbell has long been the gold standard for realistic military science fiction, particularly regarding the physics of space combat, but Shattered Spear proves his mastery extends deep into the murky waters of political intrigue. Unlike the heroic moral clarity often found in his main Lost Fleet series, this fourth installment of The Lost Stars thrives in the gray areas. The story centers on President Gwen Iceni and General Artur Drakon, two leaders who were raised in a cutthroat culture where betrayal is a survival mechanism. Watching them attempt to build a functioning, honest government in the Midway Star System while their instincts scream at them to purge their rivals creates a psychological tension that is just as gripping as the ship-to-ship battles.

Marc Vietor’s performance is nothing short of architectural; he builds the atmosphere of the Midway system with a voice that is precise, calculating, and perfectly suited for former Syndicate leaders. He gives Iceni a sharp, commanding tone that masks her underlying vulnerabilities, while his portrayal of Drakon carries a heavy, dangerous resonance. Vietor understands the pacing of Campbell’s writing intimately. In the high-stakes tactical discussions, he keeps the tempo tight and urgent, but during the moments of political maneuvering, he slows down, allowing the listener to hear the unspoken threats hanging between the dialogue. It is a sophisticated performance that elevates the source material.

The narrative stakes in this volume are escalated by the return of the Enigmas, an alien threat that forces humanity to look outward rather than inward. Campbell does an excellent job of balancing the macro-scale threat of extraterrestrial invasion with the micro-scale threat of assassination and mutiny. The space battles are, as expected, choreographed with a physicist’s eye for detail – time delays, light speed limitations, and kinetic energy weapons are all handled with the realism fans crave. However, the true strength here is seeing how the “wolves” of the Syndicate try to learn how to be shepherds for their people.

This audiobook is a must-listen for fans of space opera who prefer their heroes a little damaged and their politics Machiavellian. If you enjoy the tactical depth of The Expanse or the political maneuvering of Dune, this spin-off series offers a rewarding perspective on the Lost Fleet universe. It is a compelling study of leadership under duress, asking the hard question of whether bad people can do good things when the survival of their species depends on it.
